Open Outcast is a huge project by die-hard fans of Outcast (developed by Appeal, published by Atari). The developing team consists of members of the Outcast community from many different nationalities (mostly from Germany). The goal is to create a unofficial sequel to Outcast from fans for fans. Although none of the developer is a professional or has professional skills or techniques/experiences, the most important thing is to create a game that captures the unique Outcats feeling and experience that brought all fans together. The project was started after Outcast 2 - The Lost Paradise was canceled. After a first OCMod project based on the Gothic engine, the project was restarted under the name OpenOutcast based on the Crystalspace engine. In the meantime the team changed the engine again and is now working with the CryEngine 2.
